The Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum was opened in Osa’s hometown of Chanute Kansas on June 11, 1961 by Osa’s mother Belle Leighty to tell the explorers’ adventurous life story, highlighting their safaris and the lasting contributions their documentary films have had on wildlife research and world cultures.  The museum has had a retail shop since day one to support the educational services and free family fun programs.  The name “Osa’s Ark ” was the winning entry submitted by a local 8 year old named Caitlin Shepard when the museum held a naming contest for shop.
