Kikuyu Newlyweds 1931 -E803

This is a couple Martin Johnson photographed just after their wedding ceremony in the area of Nairobi where the Kikuyu called home in 1932. Martin Johnson was obligated to get animal photos for his commercial films and his natural history minded sponsors. Martin and Osa spent a great deal of their free time making ethnic portraits such as this in an attempt to preserve a visual record of cultural traditions that were changing drastically and often disappearing right before their eyes.
